Since the Reformation, the religious history of France has been very mixed: on the one hand, we have John Calvin (born and converted in France) and the Huguenots; on the other hand, the infamous St. Bartholomew's Day massacre (1572) and the French Revolution. But what about today? With Catholicism still influential, Islam steadily growing, and more and more people in France identifying as agnostics or atheists, how is evangelical Christianity doing? As part of EMF's 'Expanded Vision', we have been trying to highlight the great needs of the whole of Europe, but especially the needs of the countries of the Balkans and the Nordics, where only a tiny percentage of the population have a true understanding of the Gospel. In a webinar on 12th September Andi Dina, a church-planting pastor in Tirana, Albania, told us about the state of the Gospel among the Albanians, not just in the country itself, but also in the surrounding nations, in which there are significant Albanian communities.
Tünde Salánki (Hungarian Reformed Church, London) and her husband István provide a kind of 'home from home' for Hungarians living and working in the UK. They have always tried to make whole families welcome in the church in St. Dunstan's Road, and Tünde is passionate about the importance of taking children into account in their ministry. As we look on in horror at the events unfolding in Ukraine and weep with its citizens, hundreds of thousands of refugees are fleeing to neighbouring countries. Many pastors have chosen to stay at their posts despite the danger, to care for the traumatised and terrified people who remain. Manuel López Franco and the church in Almuñécar, Spain, are about to renew their radio outreach project. This is just one of their evangelistic initiatives, but since COVID-19 it has become a key ministry. Pray that God will bless this ministry so that many people from Almuñécar and the surrounding area will put their trust in Christ.
