Book Bundles for Polish Preachers

16/10/2023

‘For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit..’ (Hebrews 4:12). Your pastor reads a review on the latest great ground-breaking Christian book on preaching. He clicks on the Amazon link, and it's on his doorstep the following day. Not so in much of Europe. In Poland, for example, sound Christian literature is hard to come by, which leaves pastors and preachers with limited resources when preparing to preach and share the gospel. Legatio, the Polish Christian publishing house headed up by our Poland mission partner Krzysztof, has been given a wonderful opportunity: they have been asked to attend a large Christian conference in Warsaw with a bookstall, and also to include some of their literature in the free bundle of resources given to each attendee. This might not sound out of the ordinary for us Brits, but the initiative will not only allow Legatio to distribute great books to those who might not have many; it also gives them the chance to promote their work more widely throughout the country. It's no small ask. They will have to provide literature in at least 4 different languages, and they need an urgent reprint of a book that has just gone out of stock, but they are excited and energised by the challenge!

At EMF HQ, we were delighted to hear from two of our Poland mission partners recently - Krzysztof Rutkowski and Dawid Kozioł - regarding an exciting new opportunity, which they are tackling head-on.

Mission: Legatio

The place? Warsaw.

The dates? 17-18 November 2023.

The event? A conference entitled: “How to Speak the Word of God in our Churches”.

The opportunity? Legatio, the Polish Christian publishing house headed up by Krzysztof, has been invited to attend the conference, with a stand where they can sell their books, and also to contribute to the bundle of free resources that each attendee will receive.

This conference, run by Encouragement International Inc., First Evangelical Christian Church in Warsaw, and First Baptist Church in Warsaw will be attended by participants from various evangelical churches across Poland. These will be pastors and teachers of God’s word – Polish, English, Russian, and Ukrainian-speaking. The overall theme of the weekend is Expository Preaching, and the keynote speaker is Dr Steven Lawson (OnePassion Ministries).  Dr Lawson is a well-known speaker and writer on this topic – his ministry is dedicated to preaching and helping others to preach.

Dawid Kozioł explains why this invitation is so exciting: “First of all, we want to show with our presence how important expository teaching is. Unfortunately, we see major gaps in this area in many evangelical churches in Poland.

“We also want to promote good Christian literature among preachers…  We hope that through our participation as a publishing house, we will be able to make many preachers aware that what Legatio offers can be helpful to them in their ministry.”

Legatio was set up in 1997, and since then has published many Bible commentaries and other books in the Polish language. Dawid explains that this is a difficult and sometimes frustrating work, as there is a shortage of good translators, and then, when the books are printed, the market is small and already saturated with “Christian” books. So to have an opportunity to have a bookstall at an event like this, introducing Legatio to a new audience and allowing them to get good literature out there, is a real encouragement and blessing to them. It will give these EMF workers a chance not only to meet and speak with other pastors and preachers, but to introduce and promote Legatio’s books, including the recently published Who Made God by Edgar Andrews, The Christian Life by Sinclair B. Ferguson, and Sanctification by David Campbell.

A few years ago, Preaching and Preachers by Dr Martin Lloyd-Jones was translated into Polish, but supplies recently ran out. So Legatio are now getting it re-printed to include in the attendees’ free pack. They will also provide it in English where needed, and hope to have some other materials in Russian and Ukrainian. So every attendee will go home with at least one great book, and Krzyzstof and Dawid hope that, in reading it, many will be inspired to look at what other books Legatio can provide.

Note: Some of Legatio’s translated books have been sponsored by churches in the UK. If you’re interested in finding out more about how you can be involved, please contact hq@europeanmission.org.

Prayer Points

Please pray for this conference:

  • that a good number will attend;
  • that many would be encouraged to move towards more expository preaching;
  • that Legatio’s participation will go well and that they’ll have a good chance to promote their books.
