Ternopil Teams go to where it is Toughest: in their own words

17/3/2023

Destruction and deprivation. That is what the teams from the Ternopil warehouse (to which we have shipped goods since last year) saw as they travelled right across to the eastern Mykolayiv region with aid: food, water, blankets, Bibles. Here is their own account of the devastation they have witnessed in that area of Ukraine.

The team's recent trip to the Mykolayiv region.

In addition to visiting the city itself, the team went to the frontline villages. Novohryhorivka is one such village, it was surrounded by Russians from three sides. When the Russian army moved away from the village, volunteers started coming there and saw the terrible situation.

Trying to rebuild

TryingAfter long months of shelling, people live without electricity, water and communication, destroyed infrastructure and many mines remain, many of which have not yet been demined. But even in spite of this, the locals are trying to return to their homes and restore their native village. People believe in victory and do everything possible for it.

The road to the village of Novohryhorivka is littered with craters from rockets that are visible to the naked eye, there are piles of shell casings on the roadside, broken wires, and remnants of cluster munitions sticking out from the football field near the school.

Ammunition still lies around the village

During the Russian occupation, fierce battles continued on the outskirts of the village. Almost all the locals left then, now little by little they are returning with their families, even children. Houses are destroyed, some had to spend the winter with neighbors, relatives or in their own barns until the house is rebuilt, or at least the roof is covered with film.

Lives and homes ruined

To help the locals, volunteers come here with food, bread, drinking water, hygiene, medicines and other things necessary for living in the village.

The team arrived to find a depressing scene of dire need

Also, our team, having arrived in this village, was able to bring humanitarian aid to the locals, communicate with them and support them in this difficult time. The team saw a village in which there is not a single surviving house and there are crippled people. But they could not imagine that the situation there was so terrible.

The price of victory and a free Ukraine is so high that sometimes it is impossible to be imagined.

One of the biggest problems the villagers face is the lack of food. People are forced to eat unhealthy and insufficient food, which can lead to diseases and other health problems. Lack of water is another important problem faced not only by the residents of the liberated village, but also by the residents of Mykolaiv. Since in the city, sewage treatment facilities, water supply and three sewage pumping stations have been damaged since last April 2022. The problem with water in the city arose due to shelling and bombing by the Russian army, which is doing everything to destroy Ukrainian infrastructure.

The situation with water supply improved at the beginning of May. Initially, water was served twice a day, hourly. And only in June, water became available in most areas 24 hours a day. The new quality of water has a strong impact on the water supply network, which is quite outdated, so the water in the taps is only suitable for household needs.

Today, Mykolaiv residents themselves say that technical water is used mainly for washing dishes, laundry, showering and for technical needs. The water that is collected in the churches, which are the aid distribution points, is used for cooking.

In the village, as a result of the destruction of infrastructure and water supply systems, people spend a large part of the day trying to find and provide water for themselves and their families. Lack of medical care is another important problem. Also, people are forced to live with unsatisfactory sanitary conditions, which can contribute to the spread of diseases.

Blankets and food. So welcome!

Destruction of residential buildings and infrastructure has become a serious problem. Many people were left without homes and places to live, as well as without access to electricity and other services.

There is a lot of work to do in the Mykolayiv region, as well as many people in need.

In one of the local churches of Mykolaiv, from the beginning of the full-scale invasion and until today, they continue to distribute not only food for the continuation of physical life, but also spiritual food and psychological support. More than 460 people come every week to the church for humanitarian aid.

The churches are usually full!

Aid to this region is much needed. Thanks to her, people have the opportunity to continue living, and this is not an exaggeration. There is a terrible humanitarian crisis there, which is getting worse every day. People thank you very much for the help, they say that they are very tired, and the help is like an encouragement that they are not forgotten, that someone is worried about them and loves them. And this knowledge helps them a lot to keep moving and continue the fight.

The queues for aid are long

Unfortunately, our situation is not getting better, new difficulties and challenges arise every day. Last night, the enemy launched a massive missile attack on the critical infrastructure of Ukraine and residential buildings. There are many injured, as well as fatalities.

The enemy launched 81 missiles of various range, including Dagger missiles, which our air forces cannot shoot down. Rockets are flying to all cities of Ukraine and there is no safe place anywhere.

We continue to fight and defend our land and, with your help, help those who suffer from this terrible war.

We continue to ask you to withstand through this difficult period for our country and its people. Thank you for everything you have already done and continue to do. It is easier for us to endure this period with you!
