A mini camp. A great encouragement

12/5/2023

There must be worse places to have a camp than in Almuñecar, southern Spain! Alba Ortega and husband Manuel López Franco (he pastors the Reformed Evangelical Church there) have no young people in their small fellowship. But that didn't stop them holding a young people's camp at Easter! Alba tells the story ... https://www.facebook.com/IglesiaEvangelicaReformadaDeAlmunecar

Alba talks about their Easter camp ...

This Easter in Almuñécar we were able to see how God is able to multiply the little we have and transform it into a great blessing for many.
We started with the idea of a camp for young people, not because we had young people, but precisely because we don't have any and we would like to attract young non-believers, children of people we know.
Until the last moment (literally the night before we started) we didn't know exactly how many young people we were going to have, although we did think that in our "cave" (the back of our flat) we could only have eight people: four boys and four girls, which, interestingly enough, is what God sent us.

During this week we have also faced setbacks, as on the first day, one of the girls (Sarah), injured her ankle and could not participate in the activities, although her younger brother (Jan) did, and we have witnessed a very positive change in his attitude towards the church and us, to the point that he started to come, almost forced by his mother, and is now very open to the gospel message. These two siblings are our contacts in town, with whom we hope to start and reach more young people in Almuñécar.

It was also a joy to have Claudia, another of the girls who attended, who is the daughter of one of Alba's best friends (to whom she has been speaking about the gospel for 30 years), come and connect with young believers; this was her first contact with the church.
Sports , sand and sunshine.

On a practical level, we had to postpone activities due to wind and other factors beyond our control; the church car also broke down when we went kayaking and had to be towed away. All these things meant that we practically had to improvise as we went along and we had to be very flexible with everything.

Time to get together around the Bible

Despite this, the kids had a great time together with outdoor activities, walks along the river and on the mountain, social work collecting 13 bags of rubbish (where they were even applauded and congratulated), sports on the beach, lots of laughter, and above all, the Word of God.

Fun and friendship

We are very clear that this year has served as an experience for us to perfect things, but we are convinced that the idea has a lot of potential and we would definitely like to repeat it, although we know all the work that is involved, and we would be grateful for future help.

(P.S. Alba has since reported that Sarah and Jan's mum has started to attend the services)
